Sub-14 Sevens Report by Lorne "Mower" King

The Sub 14 sevens team played the latest tournament in the sevens circuit at Belas on Saturday. This was the strongest sevens team we have been able to choose this season and the lads did not disappoint claiming 3rd place and losing an epic semi final.

Our first game was against Belas a team that has beaten us at previous tournaments. But with Patrick 'The Ice Man' Frost playing his first game of the season they did not stand a chance and we beat them 4-1. The tone was set from the opening whistle as from the kick off Santiago 'The Knife' Sharp smashed their first ball receiver. This game included a couple of tries from Lucas 'Magic Hands' Mount. Our next game was against Jumamenha from Spain and we won this game easily 6-0 with a few tries from Nick 'Muscles' Meotti and a spectacular 30 metre sprint down the touchline try from Luca 'Linguini' Borgogno.

This put as through to the Semi final. The first semi final we have reached this season. However the draw was not kind to us, as it pitted us against Sao Joao da Talha. They have won every sevens tournament there has been this season in the Sub 14 age group, and have never been beaten. After a poor start, going behind 2-0 the boys showed tremendous fighting spirit to get it back to 2-2 with an opportunistic try from Theo 'The Titan' de Quay. What followed was end to end play and desperate defence from St Julian's none more heroic than Lucas 'Hurricane' Hulten. In the end our opposition pulled through and won 4-2 but we managed to get them to panic for the first time this season. Of all the St Julian's games I have watched this season in every age group I have to say that was the best performance I have seen. And we lost. Like they say sometimes you gain more in defeat than in victory.

This put us into the 3rd place playoff against Loule. With the game deadlocked at 2-2 five minutes of extra time was required. It was time for something different to be produced. Cue the much maligned Banana 1 move. But it is only maligned from the President of the rugby club as the move has been responsible for at least 20 tries this season in the sub 10 age group. And yet again it came to the rescue. In a perfectly executed switch from the 'Magic Hands' to Gabriel 'The Atom Bomb' Abdali a glorious try was scored resulting in a 3-2 win for the boys. Well done! A great afternoon of rugby.
