Sub-14 Sevens Report by Lorne King

On Sunday the Sub 14's took a team to Moita to take part in a sevens tournament. Sevens is an unusual format for the boys as the are used to playing 13 a side rugby. There are a lot of skills required in sevens that you don't always execute much in 13 a side rugby. There is a lot more space on the field, you avoid contact and there are no real positions in the team, as everyone is expected to work hard. Some of the teams at the tournament only play sevens and so their skills are more developed than ours.

Nevertheless we managed to win two and lose two. Our first game was a 5-0 victory over a Spanish outfit. We then lost our second game to Belas 4-0. We lost to Loule 4-1 and our final game was a 3-1 victory over Belenenses. There were some good tries from Lucas Mount and Lucas Hulten who seemed to take to the sevens format. Highlight of the day Nick Meotti's steal and 60 metre run for a try against Loule. There was also an eventful Sub 14 debut from the mercurial Afonso Portugal. First game first try! Then he took a massive hit in the process of going for his second try that ended his day of rugby prematurely. Our sevens skill level is not up where it should be yet, but we look forward to improving in the next few tournaments.
