With 200 players, coaches, parents and friends packed into St. Julian's School Main Hall, the Rugby Club's End of Season and Awards Dinner again proved to be a hugely enjoyable evening. A splendid meal was provided by Aldeia Catering and fine wine, generously donated by Quinta da Bacalhôa, unsurprisingly flowed very freely on the adult tables.

Although some of the coaches favoured a more risqué, freestyle approach with their speeches, they had generally prepared them carefully and catered well for their fairly mixed audience, whose attention barely wavered over the course of the evening and who also managed to keep their heckling to mercifully tolerable levels throughout. As ever, the age-group slideshows, accompanied by some catchy music soundtracks, proved to be very popular.

We were blessed on the night with a host of VIPs who were on hand to give out the prizes, and included the Headmaster (Craig Monaghan), our main sponsor (Tim Vieira), former Rugby international (Pedro Pissarra) and the President of Escolinha de Rugby da Galiza (Maria Gaivão).

António Espírito Santo and Rafael Braga respectively won the Senior and Junior Player of the Season Awards and the Sub-10 Team won the trophy for the Team of the Season. In all, twenty six player awards were presented. Mr Peter Fay and Mr Michael Hultén were worthy joint winners of the Best Photographer Award, and the sub-8 coach, Mr Pedro Vital, picked up the other special award (Treinador Mais Adorável), albeit against limited opposition.

The raffle proved particularly successful, with generous donations of prizes from many quarters, including a barbecue grill from Alaire Portugal (Ilan Feld), very special wine from Quinta de Sant’Ana (the Frosts), vouchers from Fitness Hut (Nick Coutts) and Bike Plan (Bernardo Pereira) and some craft work (Davina Primo). As has become traditional, partially successful attempts were made to corner the raffle market, which resulted in some unfair aspersions being cast in the direction of the clearly blameless raffle-drawer Charles Frost, but also an excellent boost for the Club’s funds. The top prize, of two nights for two in a 4 star hotel on the Algarve (courtesy of Bernardo Mendes at Wide Travel) was auctioned off for a princely sum after some very competitive and clever tactical bidding.

Many thanks are due to St. Julian's School for hosting the event, the donors of prizes for the raffle, Aldeia Catering for the fine fare, Jessica Hubert for organising the dinner, Pedro torres and Francisco Ermida for technical support, Danilo Ballotta and Matt Heger for the age-group slidshows, Olavo Mendes, Carla Mifsud and Clara Correia for looking after the younger players and to all those who attended the dinner and made it so much fun on the night.
