Sub-12 Report by Lorne King

The St Julian's rugby tour to Treviso has done wonders for the Sub 12 team. They are now operating at a level where everything is becoming natural on the rugby field. All the players are aware of what is expected of them, and they are executing it without persuasion from coaches.
This was very evident at the CDUL sponsors Convivio on Saturday with three victories out of three. The event itself was poorly organised with teams not arriving, some teams not having enough players and organisers in no hurry to make games happen. As a result we were running about 40 minutes behind the whole day. We did not let this affect us however.
The boys began the day with a 8-0 victory over Agronomia B. Special credit in this game must go to Diogo Alves, as he left his sick bed in the morning to give it a go, and come and play for his team. After a few minutes though it was evident that there was no use in pushing the poor chap to the limit and his day was over. Our second game was against Sporting and we won this game 6-1 with a 80 metre wonder try from Vasco Mendes.
After more delays we eventually got a game against a weakened CDUL side. We ran away with this game 7-0 with Gabriel Abdali running riot with a few tries and.. pleasing to see a couple of assists too. Although the opposition was not the strongest on the weekend, we still gave them no space and did not allow them to play, and there was some big tackles from the likes of Vasco, Diogo Johnson and Vicente Brandao. It was great to see, that there was no one player who scored all the tries or did all the work, everyone played their part equally on Saturday.
Well done Sub 12's.

Sub-10 Report by Nick Coutts

Saturday 23rd saw St Julians sub 10's compete in the "CDUL Sponsors" Convivio.
The first match was against Setubal and we were simply in a different league, scoring our own tries at will, whilst conceding only 1 "soft" try.
The second match was against, what we imagined would be much tougher opponents; Cascais, who we hadn't yet faced this season. But in fact, if anything, the game was even more of a whitewash than the first, with St Julians winning by 11 tries to nil!
Throughout these two matches, it was fantastic to see our boys perform so strongly as a team. "The Treviso effect" was clearly on display for all to see. Having come through the intense matches, and battling performances that Italy demanded, the boys have bonded and are clearly enjoying playing rugby with each other!
Saturday's final match was against Direito; a team that we had beaten earlier in the season. Here, things finally didn't go quite to plan. Direito were strong, well organized and put us under great pressure. Their "rush defence" managed to make the pitch seem smaller and there were simply no gaps for our strike runners. The boys spent the game tackling and defending well but no real attacking opportunities presented themselves. We went down fighting and lost 2-0.
Overall the boys played really, really well. There's no doubt that our team is right up there with the best 2 or 3 sub 10's units in Portugal. For now, we've got 2 more Monday afternoon training sessions before finishing the season with our home convivio on June 6th. After yesterday's performances I think we should be looking forward to this last one as a real opportunity to have fun playing great attacking rugby, and we've got to be aiming for a clean-sweep of wins, irrespective of who we face! Bring it on!
