Sub-16 Match Report by Craig Monaghan

SJRC  22 – 14  São Miguel

For our last game of 15s for the season this was an important one.   Against a depleted São Miguel side we made a potentially simple game look very tough by committing a host of simple errors and some selfish ball-carrying.  Going ahead with two quick tries, we allowed ourselves to be distracted by some spoiling tactics and good play from the other team.  As a result, with 10 minutes to go in the game São Miguel hit the lead with their second try.   This was a defining moment in the game when our boys would either play for one another or crack.   They did exactly what was required and worked hard for one another and hit back twice with some fantastic defense to finish the game in front, even with a man in the sin bin.

Player of the match was Tomás Silva with an outstanding ball-carrying and tackling performance.

So our 15s season in summary…

15 matches

12 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses (an 80% win ratio) - a top-four finish is a good result for this team.  This competition had some outstanding teams which we put away and two others that were a bridge too far.

We played for one another in this competition, with amazing spirit and enjoyment of each other’s company and had some exceptional attacking and defensive rugby most of the season.

We now move our focus to Sevens where we start training in 2 weeks’ time.
