SJRC - 61 - 5 Caldas RC
After dominating the competition we hit a lull prior to the Easter break. We know as coaches every season has highs and lows and we as a group had to recover from our first loss to Évora and then a draw at Santarém. As a result, we worked very hard before the game discussing responsibility, attitude and mental imagery. What dividends these discussions paid! With a depleted squad we produced probably our team's best performance of the season against a good team (surpassing the fantastic defensive team effort against Benfica in the mud). Things really clicked in attack and our defence was at times superb.
It was very hard to select the MOM award as so many deserved this. The three quarters were exceptional in closing down what was a talented back line so that there was no space for them to attack. In the forwards António Espírito Santo was again outstanding, while in the backs Manuel Carneiro, TinTin Bader, João Caneças and Matias van Zanten were impressive with ball in hand and in defence. José Maria Novais was pre-eminant, however, not only scoring 4 tries but stepping up in a dominating display of raw power to be named Man of the Match.
We played for each other and for our club with the pride and passion that was missing in the game against Évora and the bonus point has placed us 1 point off the top of the table again. We have a top of the table clash away this weekend that may determine the championship. The attitude displayed and bonds formed during this outstanding win will need to be further built on up in Coimbra. Get ready for a big one, boys ….
We now have everything in our hands - keep winning big and the championship could still be ours yet!
