Sub-12A Convívio Report by Lorne King

St Julian's hosted a very successful home convivio on Saturday 24 January. It proved a very successful one for the sub 12's as well.

The A squad won all three of their matches against strong opposition. It begun
with a 6-1 victory over Galiza with new recruit Diogo Alves having a stormer.
We then beat CRE 1-0 with a last minute try from powerhouse Rafa Braga. Our
last game was against a familiar foe in Caldas. After trailing 3-1 the chaps
dug deep, showed massive heart and came back and won 4-3 with Luca Borgogno
diving over for the winning try.

This was the best the team has played all season. They played as a team and
put so much pressure on their opponents. They are all starting to put what
they practice into a match situation.

The B team also played some great rugby. They had a win a draw and a narrow
5-3 loss against strong A team opposition. Rinke Imming was prominent in all
three games and is really improving a lot. Well done to all the players
involved it was a great turnout. Let's keep it up for the rest of the season.

Sub-12B Convívio Report by Jan de Pooter

The sub 12 B-team had a great Saturday afternoon. With the help of a couple of slightly over-age year 7 boys (thank you Patrick Frost and Theo Stucky de Quay) we had a strong team together. In the first 10 minutes of the first game against Caldas we were not switched on yet and Caldas scored quickly 3 tries. But after that the team started to play as a team and we started to put the things we learn at training in practice. We started to be quicker at the ruck, made more tackles and we passed the ball to our speedy players like Diogo Johnson. Not long after that we scored our first try. We ended the game with 5-3 for Caldas.

Our next game was against our sister club Galiza. With the upward trend from the first game the team was eager to play. This time we were switched on from the beginning and we played as a real team.  It was a fair and even game and the whole team was working hard. Our effort was rewarded and with a 4-2 victory we were ready for our last game of the afternoon against S J Talha/ADS.

Our last game was probably the most difficult game and Talha/ADS turned out to be a tough opponent and played more physical than the first 2 games. But with the confidence we gained during the first two games the team was not impressed and we probably played our best game of the day. Everybody was working hard and Alex and Mateus were unstoppable. With a 3-3 tie we closed the day with a fantastic result.

The whole team was proud of the improvements we made during the afternoon. With confidence and eagerness we look forward to the next convivio.

Sub-10 Convívio Report by Nick Coutts and Samy Djavidnia

Saturday was yet another glorious warm, sunny Portuguese January day, providing us with the perfect setting for an afternoon chasing the oval ball

Our sub 10’s A’s & B’s squads took full advantage of the conditions, and home advantage, playing some really good rugby.

The A’s steamed through their first 2 matches, against Galiza & Sporting Lisbon, scoring multiple times whilst only conceding one.

The final match was against a very strong, disciplined Evora side that had also convincingly won their first two matches

The A’s rose to the test, showing excellent team-spirit, digging deep and playing with high intensity throughout the match. Big tackles, great rucking and finally putting together several passes for well worked multiple-phase tries.

We got the 3rd win, but it was the way that we won that was most important. This was the best rugby we’ve played all season, and gives us something solid to build on for the tougher opposition to be faced in Treviso

The B’s played 3 games against Planalto, Galiza and Caldas. While the boys lacked some overall team structure, they put on some excellent individual performances yielding a number of very exciting and well worked tries. The typical rugby spirit of sportsmanship and friendship were as ever so clear on the day, as St. Julian’s players joined forces with Loule’ to play against Sporting Lisbon during one of our [long] breaks, while Caldas was kind enough to loan two of their most valuable players in their last game against us.

The B’s have an important objective for the remainder of the season, to focus more during the training sessions and to apply what they learn during the convivios. There is enough room for improvement to challenge the As for a top-spot!

It’s difficult to pick any individual out, as this was all about the strength of the team! Brilliant! You were awesome boys!

Sub-8 Convívio Report by Pedro Vital
