The latest outfit to test the Casuals’mettle were Lisbon’s very own Dark Horses. With a warm-up that lasted longer than the sum total of the Casuals’ total training output over the last 5 years, the Horses showed they were serious about ruffling a few feathers and proudly announcing themselves on the Semi-serious rugby scene. However, with a near-full strength squad assembled, some youthful vigour waiting on the sidelines and a vociferous St Julian’s crowd, it didn’t take long for the Casuals’ to take first blood. And then a lot more.

Although Good Ship Casuals appeared in need of serious oiling when a few rusty passes were flung and spilled (naturally followed by morale boosting words of encouragement from Mr Mount) in the early stages, once the Casuals built up a rhythm and head of steam the Horses defence was becoming increasingly unlocked. Messrs Jones and Steele bossed a fast flowing encounter and were spoiled for choice when looking for runners in the back line. Regulars Rains and Roberto ran ragged the rickety Horses defence and Dereito loan signing Bernardo had his share in the happy wreck to plunder a quintet of tries.

Mention is of course due to the tireless pack who as ever embodied the Casuals spirit by harrying and chasing any cause no matter how lost, painful or pointless (with one ear on the sidelines listening out for the imminent arrival of Bond junior - Mia Florence, born Wednesday –nice one Andy and Michele) and securing enough possession to entertain the fastidious crowd with some slick and precise flowing rugby. Next encounter will no doubt be a bruising one against a London touring club on April 1st. Tickets available at all good sports stores and the first 5 spectators to be dressed in green and white win a signed programme.
