55 St. Julian's Rugby players from the sub-8/10/12/14 age-groups travelled to Treviso in Italy to participate in the Trofeo Topolino. Read the report, view the image gallery and youtube videos/slideshows here.

The Trofeo Topolino, played over the weekend of 8/9 May, is one of the largest junior Rugby festivals in the world, with over 5,000 players from all over Italy and elsewhere in Europe. Our 55 players were accompanied by 10 coaches, as well as over 30 parents, 4 brothers and sisters and 4 grandparents!! It was a truly unforgettable experience for all involved.

Up against much bigger opposition for the most part, and scheduled to play up to 10 games over the two days of the tournament, our teams fronted up physically and produced some extraordinarily courageous performances that made us all very proud indeed.

The top-ranked team was the sub-10s, who at times played some sparkling running Rugby, but the sub-12s also had the distinction of going through their first seven games on the Saturday unbeaten, including a remarkable draw against the host club Benneton Treviso.

Both the sub-8s and the sub-14s struggled a bit more, but still emerged with some great wins as well as some spirited defeats.

In spite of the high temperatures and the sheer exhaustion of the physical challenge, it was, above all, a great weekend of fun playing Rugby with team mates in Italy.

The value of a Rugby Tour abroad in building stronger relationships between team mates was fully borne out, even for the youngest players.

Sub-8 player Sebastian Welman, asked what he liked most about the Tour, summed it up perfectly when he said "I liked it ALL the most".

Many thanks to all those who made this trip possible, from St. Julian's School, to Tour Fundraisers, to parents who entrusted us with their children, to our fantastic coaches, to the players' schools for releasing them and their coaches on the Friday and, especially, to our Sub-8 coach and resident Italian Samuel Djavidnia for his key role in organising the Tour.

As one of the Clubs that had travelled from other countries to Treviso, we were featured in a Sky Sports Italy report (click on the youtube link below to see the video summary).
